What’s Really Changed

Can you really read the tea leaves?

Lucky you. You’ve reached the point where you’re so close to an offer you can taste it… and it tastes mighty fine.

So while you’re waiting for the offer that you’re all but certain you’re going to get, what do you do? How do handle your job search at that point?

A lot can happen

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase, “It’s never over until it’s over.” Your job search is not over until you’ve received an offer and you’ve accepted it and you have a start date. It’s a crazy world we live in and the job search world is no different.

There are 1,000 and one things that can happen to prevent you from getting that offer – some of which you can’t even imagine. The bottom line is that until you have that offer in hand and have accepted it, keep on looking. Don’t take anything for granted.

You can always cancel a new interview and accepting a position is a pretty sound and rationale reason for cancelling. If you have an offer but still go on that next interview (there may be numerous reasons to continue) be sure to tell the interviewer about the offer. Most likely they will appreciate your frankness. Above all, don’t lie about it.

If you’re fortunate enough to have received an offer, until the deal is done, until the ink has dried on your acceptance letter and they’ve given you a start date, proceed as if nothing has changed. Because, until your new deal actually has closed, nothing has changed.
