Successful job seeking requires more tools than you can imagine
➔ People talk about more than one way to skin a cat. The same holds true for your job search. Sure there are the ever-present regulars such as networking, informational interviews, job boards, LinkedIn, et.al. There are more.
The list is endless
There are some more off-beat ways that people have landed jobs over the years. How about being in the right place at the right time? You’ve heard that one before. A candidate walks in the door just as someone else is walking out. We’ve heard tales about that happening literally. Talk about timing… or is luck? Or both?
We’ve even heard of a company that hired someone just to stop him from pestering them for a job. The so-called candidate was so persistent that the hiring manager just wanted to get him to stop calling and asking for a job.
Perhaps our favorite is the woman who was looking for a job and arranged to meet someone in a coffee shop to discuss opportunities, the work place, the job market, etc. So far, so typical.
While waiting our damsel was checking her phone for messages when she couldn’t help but over hear the conversation at the next table. There, two men were discussing how they needed to find someone to perform a certain job.
Upon hearing this, our lady-in-waiting leaned over and interrupted their conversation. “I can do that,” she said and – long story, short – they hired her.
Being in the right place at the right time, check. Paying attention to what was going on around her, check. Being assertive enough to respond to an opportunity when she heard one, check. True story.
It just goes to prove that there are opportunities under any rock if you look under enough of them.
