Successful job seekers need many qualities
➔ There are many traits shared by successful job seekers – many of them we’ve addressed in this space. When all is said and done, however, perhaps the most important of them all just might be perseverance. That innate ability to keep at it no matter how many obstacles clutter your path.
Many titans of history have addressed this topic but it may be that Winston Churchill summed it up best. The great British prime minister and war leader was quoted as saying: “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”
The unspoken suggestion here is that if you stop, you’ll remain in hell. But, if you keep moving eventually you’ll find your way through it.
Inspiration where you least expect it
No doubt figures of Churchill’s stature will endure for centuries – and beyond. There are nuggets of wisdom, however, in lesser known, but no less insightful individuals.
Legendary football coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, has a very long list of quotations attributed to him and his success. Many of them could apply to today’s mature job seeker.
It was one of his players, Jerry Kramer, who said something that every job seeker should take to heart. Kramer, the Hall of Fame offensive guard made this observation on the game of football, “It’s a simple game really. You just put your head down and shove.”
That quote easily can be applied to job seeking. As tumultuous as it may seem at times, a job search requires that the job seeker just puts down his head and keeps pushing forward with contacts, applications and networking until the prize is won. Despite the tricks and maneuvers that may be involved, when you get right down to it, it really is a simple concept.
Perseverance and keep shoving. With a generous amount of both, regardless of your age, you will prevail.
