You’ll be the better for it

There are so many things that go into a job search. This holds true whether that job search is successful or not. This holds true whether that job search is taking place in 2026 or 30 years ago – or more.

It’s true that today’s job search may have more and different nuances that one did decades ago, but make no mistake, some parts of that job search have remained steadfast over time.

So much the same

Because we’ve discussed these in the past, there is not much need to expound on the constants. In no particular order, here are a few favorites. People hire people. That’s as true today as it was in 1956. Networking is critical to a job search. There may be more and different ways to do it today, but networking is the equivalent of the old saying “cash is king.” It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. In today’s job market it’s a huge benefit that there are so many more ways to know and find people, but people remain the key.

There is another axiom that is as true today as it was when you were first cutting your teeth in the workforce. People don’t tend to talk about it much, but it’s no less important. That has to do with introspection. Can you look deep inside yourself and be brutally honest about your strengths, your accomplishments? It’s not an easy thing to do.

A successful job seeker has to be able to stand up and not be afraid to challenge and question yourself. It also helps to go the extra mile to seek out others who will do the same to you. The benefits can be huge and, what’s more, they will be solid; grounded on the truth of how you see yourself.

According to Forbes, like many, you’re probably much tougher on yourself than you’d ever be on anyone else. And that’s where the big payoff is.
