There are a lot of skills that most older job seekers already possess

Skills. Employers all want certain skills for various jobs. Age 50+ job seekers sometimes complain that they don’t have the skills to compete in today’s workplace. Or, they may go to great lengths to “upgrade” or “update” their skills.

While that’s all well and good, there are a lot of skills that most older job seekers already possess that are highly valued and sought after by today’s employers. Fortunately, these are skills that you don’t have to receive any special training. These skills don’t even require a high level of intelligence… although we must admit that a healthy dose of common sense may be a pre-requisite.

And the list goes on…

This list of skills is very popular on today’s internet – so much so that it’s difficult to pin down the originator. In fact, despite many similarities, all the lists aren’t exactly the same, but they’re all good.

Without further ado, here are 10 Things That Require Zero Talent – that are also highly valued in the workplace – any time, anywhere, in any industry, in any position. In no particular order…

1. Being on Time. If you value your position and are responsible, you’ll be there on time, largely because you have a strong…

2. Work Ethic. Boomers can trace their work ethic back to their Depression-era parents. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

3. Effort. Again, if you’re work ethic is strong, the effort will follow.

4. Body Language. An almost un-conscious display of your work ethic and effort.

5. Energy. If you’ve checked off any of the above, you have the energy to succeed in today’s workplace – regardless of your age.

6. Attitude. A treasured approach to work that is the sum of much of the above.

7. Passion. Add together the items on this list and they will equal passion.

8. Being Coachable. One of the great myths about older workers is that they are unwilling to learn new things. The key word here is “myth.”

9. Doing Extra. When you have the work ethic, the passion and the energy, you naturally will do whatever it takes.

10. Being Prepared. As we’ve stated many times, this starts with preparing for the job interview and carries right through your everyday work.

Not only do you not need talent to possess any of these traits, you can acquire each and every one of them for free. What are you waiting for?
