Despite the obvious, treat video interviews just like any other

With the proliferation of cameras throughout our everyday lives, should come as any surprise that video technology would find its way into the job search process? If you’ve been job searching even for a short time, you know that the video interview is becoming more and more popular. As a result of the pandemic, the word Zoom has taken on an entirely different meaning.
For the most part, the reasons are obvious. But what can you, the interviewee, do to maximize the likelihood of you surviving the process.
More than just a pretty face
First, you need to treat it like you would any other interview. Be punctual. Be well dressed. Be well prepared. But there is more.
Since the interview is based on technology, be certain that your tech is working as it should. Check it the day before to guard against something dire that may necessitate a repair or dislocation. Then again check it not more than an hour beforehand. Check your connectivity, and don’t take your audio for granted. Check that too. Set up a test interview with a friend, colleague or family member solely to check for connectivity.
Also, check your surroundings. What will the interviewer see behind you? A nicely kept bookcase, or a basket of dirty laundry? It’s your choice.
Check your environment. By that we mean is there anything nearby that could disrupt the interview. Most likely this will be either pets or kids. Put the dog or cat in another room and tell the kids that you are not to be disturbed for any reason.
It also might be a good idea to turn off your phone. And what about lighting? Are you situated in a dark basement? Are you near a window where a burst of sunlight could wash out your video signal? It’s all part of your preparations.
A last resort: if you can’t guarantee that you can control these things, you might want to go to a study room or a small conference room at your local library where disruptions will be minimized.
As a 21st Century job seeker, it’s more and more likely that you could be called upon for a video interview. You need to think through what you have to do to ensure your success and minimize any pitfalls. You can’t afford to leave the technology to chance.
