Out with the old, in with the new applies to jobs as well
While it may sound like we’re stating the obvious, but when a person leaves their job (to go wherever, for whatever reason) there’s now an opening with that employer that, in most cases, needs to be filled… and filled as soon as possible.
One of the strangest phenomenon of 2021 is what some in the media refer to as “the big quit” or “the great resignation.” As we’re ploughing through dealing with the Covid pandemic, many people (for many reasons) are quitting their jobs. According to Forbes, there is a recent Microsoft survey that purports that “41 percent of the global workforce plan on saying goodbye to their employer and colleagues this year.”
A boon for job seekers
During normal times – and the era of Covid is about as far away from “normal” as one can get – job seekers, and especially older job seekers, scour the countryside in search of job openings knowing where there is a job opening, there is an opening for them as well.
Yet, here you are – swimming in a sea of job openings. This is what many people would call “a buyer’s market.” Just drive the street in Anytown, USA and you’ll be bombarded by a proliferation of “Help Wanted” and “Now Hiring” signs.
While it’s seldom a good idea for older job seekers to be too picky in their job searches, today’s job market is definitely one where you may have an opportunity to be somewhat selective.
And if there is one piece of advice we can offer, it’s this: Strike while the iron is hot. The jobs are out there. Be vigilant. Be quick. Be responsive. Take advantage of the golden opportunity that has been handed to you, and pounce on it!
