Working with a temp agency – a free trial in reverse

The headline says “temporary inconvenience.” We hope that this is all your current employment situation is for you – temporary.

In the meantime, maybe it’s time to take another look (or maybe it’s your first look) at temporary employment.

Think about it. Today’s current employment situation suggests that companies are stretched to the limit for help. Factor in summer time and employees taking time off for summer vacations and, in all probability, there are companies that are operating with very lean staffs.

Those companies may turn to temporary agencies to get them through the summer doldrums. All of which spells opportunity for you.

When opportunity knocks…

Even if you end up not being one of those fortunate ones who go from temp to perm – and that happens a lot more often than you may think – at least you’re working; you’re employed; you’re bringing home some income. And you’re making your appearance felt with another company, another group of employees. More contacts, more connections, more experience, etc. etc. And let’s not forget many employers prefer to speak with prospects who are already employed – which you would be.

We hope that you are not one of those who would turn your nose up at temporary employment. There is a lot positive to say about pursuing the temporary work route. Think of it as a “free trial” in reverse.

We all like the idea of a free trial where you get to use the product with no obligation to purchase it. It’s like a test ride from the auto dealer. The employer may look at a temporary employee much the same way – except for the “free” part. You do get paid.

But you’re meeting a need of theirs – filling in, or handling some excess. Beyond your brief salary, they have no obligation to you. But yet, you get a first hand opportunity to show them just how valuable an employee you can be. And someone who can provide a current, positive reference.

If temporary employment is a stone that you have not looked under recently, maybe it’s time you did.
