Let the Real Person Come Through

Writing a cover letter, we have a lot of advice as to what should be included. Below is part of a cover letter that resulted in employment. What if a letter lets the real person come through? People hire people. Would the HR contact enjoy having lunch with this person?
“For seven years I led a woman’s group (specializing in addiction recovery for women.) This experience was one of the most satisfying aspects of my life. I have a strong need to contribute to the welfare of others. My concern and warm feelings are communicated in my interaction with people in crisis.
“As a certified home health care worker, I developed new skills with a determination to move into an area of personal service. My self-employment has allowed me to develop strong interpersonal skills.
“I am well organized, with a calm and helpful manner. The key to service is strong listening skills, persistence and determination in seeing problems to resolution.
“My gift is developing trust and providing follow-up. I see opportunities where others see problems. Hopefully, you are seeking staff that can provide outstanding service.”
Personal note: We did have lunch. She is a delight.
