Eight benefits of the mature worker

We recently heard a seasoned career coach review eight benefits that the mature worker brings to the table. After reviewing it, we notice that, by no means, is this list intended to be the one, definitive, complete list. There are a lot more, but this is as good a start as you’ll find.
No two people are alike, so mostly likely not all of these observations will apply to you and, more important, you can probably add a few more yourself.
Nonetheless, the eight great are:
Business acumen – Beyond their specifc jobs skills, mature workers have been around long enough to know, understand and appreciate the impact that day-to-day work has on a business and how to deal with it.
Good judgment – It should go without saying. One of the more obvious traits that come with age.
Learned through life – You learn a lot about business and how to solve problems and deal with people through your non-work life experiences as well.
Reliability – This seems to be a consistent thread among older workers. Especially when compared to some of our younger counterparts, we’re more reliable.
Sense of loyalty, commitment and purpose – It could be another generational thing, but mature workers have been proven to be more loyal. Plus, at this stage of the game, statistics show that we’re a lot less likely to be looking to move again.
Sense of self and clear priorities – All that experience helps an older worker to set realistic priorities and to be able to live within oneself.
Strong work ethic – We probably learned that from our parents – aka “the greatest generation.”
Wisdom based on work and life experience – Wisdom is where you find it and, if you’re paying attention, you can find it anywhere. And mature workers have been around the block enough times to have accumulated wisdom, experience and more.
Those were her eight. As we said earlier, there most assuredly are more. You probably know more yourself, many of which may apply to you personally, or many more that you’ve observed in other mature job seekers. No matter how you stack them up, there are more than enough reasons to hire you… and any mature job seeker.
