Trick Questions for Age Discrimination

We can’t ask your age in this job interview,

but please take this quiz about rotary phones

I love this assault on employers and recruiters who use trick questions to figure out how old you are. Give us a break! But it’s no joke. The only joke is how stoopid employers can be. This New Yorker column calls attention to the really wrong methods used to discriminate against older workers. Ageism has become so obvious — it’s really gotten old, dontcha think?

and Onto the Scene of the Crime

Second careers? We’ve run countless stories by baby boomers who’ve had them over the years. As writers, we especially like this one, by Ron Katz of Palo Alto, California. He just wasn’t ready to retire.
The problem with a so-called “retirement age,” which was devised way back in the 19th century, is that nowadays many people are not ready to retire. Basically, because our society has not set up meaningful paths forward for those who are now reaching 65 in record numbers, many baby boomers, myself included, are all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Virtual Interviews Are Here To Stay:

HireVue Conducts Millions Of One-Way Videos To Help Quickly Connect Candidates With Companies That Are Hiring

by Jack Kelly at

How hot is the job market? We’re hearing a lot about the new war for talent. To get a sense of the employment outlook, I spoke with Kevin Parker, the CEO and chairman of HireVue. The company offers video interviewing and recruiting automation technology. Parker’s company has conducted millions of interviews and has the data to show what’s really happening.
Historically, hiring decisions have been left to a hiring manager’s “gut feeling.” To avoid biases and “just winging it” interviews, HireVue created structured interview questions and rating guidelines to smooth out the process and make it easy for both candidates and companies who are hiring.

Contact Redux

What goes around, comes around

Most recruiters strongly recommend that job seekers reestablish contact with them every three months. That’s good advice, sound advice.
So, shouldn’t you be doing the same thing with all of your contacts – not just recruiters?  If you’re tagging all the bases in your job search, you probably made contact with former co-workers, former supervisors, colleagues, etc. when you first began your job search.  Good move.    MORE
